The “Modern” Condition

5 Sep

Charlie Chaplin’s film, “Modern Times”, begins with a very powerful description “Modern Times. A story of industry, of individual enterprise humanity crusading in the pursuit of happiness.” This quote previews what exactly Chaplin is about to parody, the humorous aspect of the rat race each human competes in everyday to keep up with the ever-changing world.

What is modern? Webster’s dictionary defines ‘modern’ as a characteristic of the present or the immediate past. So by definition modern is the latest and greatest. That being said, when applying this theory to any careerĀ one must be prepared to constantly be reinventing his or her self and continuously learn and obtain new skills. Without that drive to change with the times, you’ll just be left in the past.
